Shabistari says

Let reason go. For His light
burns reason up from head to foot.

If you wish to see that Face,
seek another eye. The philosopher
with his two eyes sees double,
so is unable to see the unity of the Truth.

As His light burns up the angels,
even so does it consume reason.
As the light of our eyes is to the sun,
so is the light of reason to the Light of Lights.

Shabistari says

Being a tavern haunter means
Being sprung free of yourself.

The tavern is where lovers tryst,
Where the bird of the soul comes to rest
In a sanctuary beyond space and time.
The tavern haunter wanders lonely in a desert
And sees the whole world as a mirage.
The desert is limitless and endless --
No one has seen its beginning or its end,
And even if you wandered in it a hundred years
You would not find yourself, or anyone else.
Those who live there have no feet or heads,
Are neither "believers" nor "unbelievers."
Drunk on the wine of selflessness,
They have given up good and evil alike.
Drunk, without lips or mouth, on Truth
They have thrown away all thoughts of name and fame,
All talk of wonders, visions, spiritual states,
Dreams, secret rooms, lights, miracles.

The aroma of the Divine Wine
Has made them abandon everything;
The taste for Annihilation
Has sent them all sprawling like drunkards.
For one sip of the wine of ecstasy,
They ahve thrown away pilgrim staff, water jar, and rosary.
They fall, and then they rise again,
Sometimes bright in union,
Sometimes lost in the pain of separation;
Now pouring tears of blood,
Now raised to a world of bliss,
Stretching out their necks like racers;
Now, with blackened faces, staring at a wall,
Or faces reddened with Unity, chained to a gibbet;
Now whirling in mystic dance,
Lost in the arms of the Beloved,
Losing head and foot like the revolving heavens.
Every passage that the Singer sings them
Transmits the rapture of the invisible world,
For mystic singing is not only words and sounds;
Each note unveils a priceless mystery.

They have thrown away their senses
And run from all color and perfume,
And washed in purified wine
All the different dyes: black, green, or blue.
To them, devotion and piety are only hypocrisy;
They are weary of being either masters or disciples;
They have swept the dust of dunghills from their souls,
Without telling even a tiny part of what they see,
And grasped in bliss at the swirling robes of drunkards.
They have drunk one cup of the pure wine
And have become -- at last, at long last -- real Sufis.

Shabistari says

What are "I" and "You"?
Just lattices
In the niches of a lamp
Through which the One Light radiates.

"I" and "You" are the veil
Between heaven and earth;
Lift this veil and you will see
How all sects and religions are one.

Lift this veil and you will ask --
When "I" and "You" do not exist
What is mosque?
What is synagogue?
What is fire temple?

Mahmud Shabistari says

Your eye has not strength enough
to gaze at the burning sun,
but you can see its burning light
by watching its reflection
mirrored in the water.

So the reflection of Absolute Being
can be viewed in the mirror of Not-Being,
for nonexistence, being opposite Reality,
instantly catches its reflection.

Know the world from end to end is a mirror;
in each atom a hundred suns are concealed.
If you pierce the heart of a single drop of water,
from it will flow a hundred clear oceans;
if you look intently at each speck of dust,
in it you will see a thousand beings.
A gnat in its limbs is like an elephant;
in name a drop of water resembles the Nile.
In the heart of a barleycorn is stored a hundred harvests.
Within a millet-seed a world exists.
In an insects wing is an ocean of life.
A heaven is concealed in the pupil of an eye.
The core at the center of the heart is small,
yet the Lord of both worlds will enter there.

Spiritual perception must be an individual quest or it has no meaning...Even steps in the wrong direction give us insight into the many paths designed to teach us...On the road of life we must take responsibility for all our decisions without blaming other people for life's setbacks that bring unhappiness.

Frithjof Schuon says

It was within yourself, what Heaven brought.
What comes from God is in your heart the wine
Of Bliss and Wisdom. It will ne'er be found
By those who do not stand on sacred ground.

The singing of the flute came from Above;
The flute was in my heart; the song was Love.
It was the Ocean's endless melody:
A song of God and of Eternity.

I search in the streets, I cast my sights,
The path of joy may someone behold,
The path of joy may someone behold,
How can I hide my nature, and show myself as another!
To know another is sin, every form is God Himself.

Labels:

Sachal Sarmast says

We are, what are we?
We know not, what we are!
For a moment we are blessed
For a moment we are accursed
Some moment we pray and fast
Some moment we are free spirits
Now we declare, 'Only we exist'
Now we declare, 'We don't exist'
For a bit, our heart is calm
In a bit, we weep rivers
Now we say, 'We are self-realized'
Now we ask, 'Who are we?'
'Sachal' we are only That eternally
What other contracts can we make here?

English translation:

I see neither my body nor my soul,
I see only you as my inward being and outward being.

Wheresoever I look and whatsoever I see,
I see only the vision of God.

That which come into being is nothing but the real in itself,
I see only one current of existence running everywhere.

If any worldly object is dear other than the real,
I regard it as imaginary and illusory.

English Translation:

I saw my beloved in all I saw,
At times revealed, hidden at times.

Been familiar with the issue of faith,
I saw the face of my beloved in all I saw.

At times a possibility, at times imperative,
At times ephemeral, at times eternal.

Inspired by the wish to see Himself,
He made Himself into every form.

He is the one who sees and hears
I saw no one other then Him.

Laughed gleefully through blooming flowers,
Crooned in nightingale's melodious songs.

He took the forms of the candle and the moth,
And annihilated Himself in flames of His own.

At times claiming "I am the Truth",
Witnessed his head raised on the Cross.

O 'Niyaz' He was beyond the bounds of `You' and `Me',
And yet I see Him in every `You' and `Me'.

At times he behaved like unfamiliar,
At timed I found him familiar with the face.

At times he is the emperor in power,
At times seen with a mendicant's begging bowl.

At times, a devout worshipper,
Lord of rakes and drunkards at times.

At times in the beloved's attire,
He was seen throwing up His charms.

At times as a lover like 'Niyaz',
He was seen beating his breast and heart aflame.

So har ek zarre me ishq ne humen us ka jalwa dikha diya

Jabhi ja ke maktab-e-ishq mein sabaq-e-maqam-e-fana liya

English Translation:

The moment You unveiled Your face to display Your splendour,
It was the very moment You turned me into mirror.

How do I describe my love, the impact of her ravishing glance
In a split moment, it freed me from the fetters of world's prison.

His contemplation was not possible and He was not at all discernible
Love has shown us His glory in every particle of dust though.

In the school of love when he took lessons into surrender and annihilation
All that 'Niyaz' had learnt so far he erased it all from his heart.

Beholding your appearance, Oh Nijaam
I offer myself in sacrifice.
Amongst all the girls, my scarf is the most soiled,
Look, the girls are laughing at me.
This spring, please dye my scarf for me,
Oh Nijaam, protect my honour.
In the name of Ganj-e Shakar (Nizamuddin Aulia's pir),
Protect my honour, Oh beloved Nijaam.
Qutab and Farid have come in the wedding procession,
And Khusrau is the loving bride, Oh Nijaam.
Some have to fight with the mother-in-law,
While some with sisters-in-law,
But I have you for support, Oh Nijaam.

Whatever be the price for dyeing, ask for it,
You can have my blossoming youth in mortgage;

For you to safeguard my pride, my dignity,

Long like curls in the night of separation,

My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night
without your face before.
Suddenly, using a thousand tricks, the enchanting eyes robbed me
of my tranquil mind;
Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling?
Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle,
I roam about in the fire of love;
Sleepless eyes, restless body,
neither comes she, nor any message.
In honour of the day I meet my beloved
who has lured me so long, O Khusro;
I shall keep my heart suppressed,

Sarmad says

Along the road, you were my companion
Seeking the path, you were my guide

No matter to whom I spoke, it was you who answered
When Sun called Moon to Sky, it was you who shined

In the Night of aloneness, you
were my comforter

When I laughed, you were the smile on my lips
When I cried, you were the tears on my face

When I wrote, you were the verse
When I sang, you were the song

Rarely did my heart desire another lover
Then when it did, you came to me in the other.

Rabia says

                                  I
A PIOUS friend one day of Rabia asked,
  How she had learnt the truth of Allah wholly?
By what instructions was her memory tasked—
  How was her heart estranged from this world’s folly?

She answered—‘Thou, who knowest God in parts
  Thy spirit’s moods and processes can tell;
I only know that in my heart of hearts
  I have despised myself and loved Him well.’

II

Some evil upon Rabia fell,
And one who loved and knew her wel
Murmured that God with pain undue
Should strike a child so fond and true:
But she replied—‘Believe and trust
That all I suffer is most just;
I had in contemplation strive
To realize the joys of heaven;
I had extended fancy’s flights
Through all that region of delights,—
Had counted, till the numbers failed,
The pleasures on the blest entailed,—
Had sounded the ecstatic rest
I should enjoy on Allah’s breast;
And for those thoughts I now atone
That were of something of my own,
And were not thoughts of Him alone.

III

When Rabia unto Mekkeh came,
  She stood awhile apart—alone,
Nor joined the crowd with hearts on flame
  Collected round the sacred stone.

She, like the rest, with toil had crosse
  The waves of water, rock, and sand,
And now, as one long tempest-tossed,
  Beheld the Kaabeh’s promised land.

Yet in her eyes no transport glistened;
  She seemed with shame and sorrow bowed
The shouts of prayer she hardly listened,
  But beat her heart and cried aloud:—

‘O heart! weak follower of the weak,
  That thou should’st traverse land and sea,
In this far place that God to see
  Who long ago had come to thee!’

IV

Round holy Rabia’s suffering bed
  The wise men gathered, gazing gravely—
‘Daughter of God!’ the youngest said,
  ‘Endure thy Father’s chastening bravely
They who have steeped their souls in prayer
Can every anguish calmly bear.’

She answered not, and turned aside,
  Though not reproachfully nor sadly;
‘Daughter of God!’ the eldest cried
  ‘Sustain thy Father’s chastening gladly;
They who have learnt to pray aright,
From pain’s dark well draw up delight.’

Then she spoke out—‘Your words are fair;
  But, oh! the truth lies deeper still
I know not, when absorbed in prayer,
  Pleasure or pain, or good or ill;
They who God’s face can understand
Feel not the motions of His hand.’
