Zahid ne mera hasil-e-eman nahin dekha
Rukh par teri zulfon ko pareshan nahin dekha

Har haal mein bas pesh-e-nazar hai wohi soorat
Main ne kabhi roo-e-shab-e-hijran nahin dekha
Aye thay sabhi tarhaa ke jalway mere aage
Main ne magar ae deeda-e-hairaan nahin dekha
Kya kya hua hungaam-e-junoon yeh nahi maloom
Kuch hosh jo aya to garebaan nahinndekha

Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi Quotes

  • Don't let others lead you.
They may be blind or, worse, vultures.
Reach for the rope of God.
And what is that? Putting aside self-will.

  • The lover is a king above all kings,
unafraid of death, not at all interested in a golden crown.
The dervish has a pearl concealed under his patched cloak.
Why should he go begging door to door?

  • You personify God's message.
    You reflect the King's face.
There is nothing in the universe that you are not
Everything you want, look for it within yourself--
    you are that.

  • They are the chosen ones
    who have surrendered.
Once they were particles of light
now they are the radiant sun.

  • They have left behind
    the world of deceitful games.
    They are the privileged lovers
    who create a new world
with their eyes of fiery passion.

  • The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
    Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
    Don't go back to sleep.

  • O Love, O pure deep Love, be here, be now,
Be all – worlds dissolve into your
    stainless endless radiance,
Frail living leaves burn with your brighter
    than cold stares –
Make me your servant, your breath, your core.

  • There is a candle in the heart of man, waiting to be kindled.
In separation from the Friend, there is a cut waiting to be stitched.
O, you who are ignorant of endurance
and the burning fire of love,
Love comes of its own free will, it can't be learned in any school.

  • The lover is always alone.
    even surrounded by people;
like water and oil, he remains apart.
The man who goes to the trouble
of giving advice to a lover
get nothing. He's mocked by passion.
Love is like musk. It attracts attention.
Love is a tree, and the lovers are its shade.

Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi Sayings

  • There's courage involved if you want
    to become truth.

  • Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there.

  • This divine love,
    beckons us
    to a world beyond
    only lovers can see
with their eyes of fiery passion.

  • For awhile we lived with people,
but we saw no sign in them of the faithfulness we wanted.
It's better to hide completely within
as water hides in metal, as fire hides in rock.

  • Any soul that drank the nectar of your passion was lifted.
From that water of life he is in a state of elation.
Death came, smelled me, and sensed your fragrance instead.
From then on, death lost all hope of me.

  • People are going back and forth across the doorsill
    where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
    Don't go back to sleep.

  • Any lifetime that is spent without seeing the master
Is either death in disguise or a deep sleep.
    The water that pollutes you is poison;
The poison that purifies you is water.

  • Until you've found pain, you won't reach the cure
Until you've given up life, you won't unite with
    the supreme soul
Until you've found fire inside yourself, like the Friend,
You won't reach the spring of life, like Khezr.

  • The minute I heard my first love story,
I started looking for you, not knowing
    how blind that was.
    Lovers don't finally meet somewhere,
they're in each other all along.

  • Although I may try to describe Love
when I experience it I am speechless.
Although I may try to write about Love
    I am rendered helpless;
my pen breaks and the paper slips away
    at the ineffable place
where Lover, Loving and Loved are one.
    Every moment is made glorious
    by the light of Love.

Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi Quotes

  • In the waters of purity, I melted like salt
Neither blasphemy, nor faith, nor conviction, nor doubt remained.
In the center of my heart a star has appeared
And all the seven heavens have become lost in it.

  • When you do things from your soul, you feel a river
    moving in you, a joy.

  • Without cause God gave us Being;
without cause, give it back again.

  • How long will you think about this painful life?
How long will you think about this harmful world?
The only thing it can take from you is your body.
Don't say all this rubbish and stop thinking.

  • There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life.
There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine.
O traveler, if you are in search of That
Don't look outside, look inside yourself and seek That.

  • Hundreds have looked for you and died searching
in this garden where you hide behind the scenes.
But this pain is not for those who come as lovers.
You are easy to find here. You are in the breeze and in this river of wine.

  • There is a way between voice and presence
    where information flows.
    In disciplined silence it opens.
    With wandering talk it closes.

  • When your chest is free of your limiting ego,
Then you will see the ageless Beloved.
    You can not see yourself without a mirror;
Look at the Beloved, He is the brightest mirror.

  • In love, aside from sipping the wine of timelessness,
    nothing else exists.
There is no reason for living except for giving one's life.
I said, "First I know you, then I die."
He said, "For the one who knows Me, there is no dying."

  • Come, Come again !
    Whatever you are...
    Whether you are infidel,
    idolater or fireworshipper.
Whether you have broken your vows
    of repentance a hundred times
This is not the gate of despair,
This is the gate of hope.
    Come, come again...

Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi Quotes

  • Open the love window.
The moon won't use the door,
    only the window.

  • A lifetime without Love is of no account
Love is the Water of Life
Drink it down with heart and soul!

  • Love is the cure,
for your pain will keep giving birth to more pain
until your eyes constantly exhale love
as effortlessly as your body yields its scent.

  • The sky was lit by the splendor of the moon
So powerful I fell to the ground
Your love has made me sure
I am ready to forsake this worldly life
and surrender to the magnificence of your Being

  • If I love myself
    I love you.
    If I love you
    I love myself.

  • I see so deeply within myself.
Not needing my eyes, I can see everything clearly.
Why would I want to bother my eyes again
Now that I see the world through His eyes?

  • With passion pray.
    With passion work.
    With passion make love.
With passion eat and drink and dance and play.
Why look like a dead fish
    in this ocean of God?

  • Love is from the infinite, and will remain until eternity.
The seeker of love escapes the chains of birth and death.
    Tomorrow, when resurrection comes,
The heart that is not in love will fail the test.

  • This aloneness is worth more than a thousand lives.
This freedom is worth more than all the lands on earth.
To be one with the truth for just a moment,
Is worth more than the world and life itself.

  • The intellectual is always showing off,
the lover is always getting lost.
    The intellectual runs away.
    afraid of drowning;
    the whole business of love
is to drown in the sea.

is near you: wake, oh wake!
Run to the feet of your Beloved:
for your Lord stands near to your head.
    You have slept for unnumbered ages;
this morning will you not wake?

  • Subtle is the path of love!
Therein there is no asking and no not-asking,
There one loses one’s self at His feet,
There one is immersed in the joy of the seeking:
plunged in the deeps of love as the fish in the water.
The lover is never slow in offering his head for his Lord’s service.

Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti Quotes

  • Love Towards All, Malice Towards None.
  • The spiritual disciple deserves to be called a Dervish only when he lives in the world with no self-interest.
  • There are such lovers of God, whom the love of God has made quiet to an extent that they do not know that there is anything else existing in the world.
  • He is a hardened sinner who commits sin and yet simultaneously entertains the belief that he is one the God’s ‘chosen few’.
  • A friend of God must be generous like a river. We all get water from the river to quench our thirst. It does not discriminate whether we are good or bad or whether we are a relation or a stranger.
  • The noise of the lover is only while he has not seen his Beloved. Once he sees the beloved, he becomes calm and quiet, just as the rivers are boisterous before they join the ocean, but when they do so, there are becalmed forever.
  • The heart was essentially created for making rounds of the love of God.
  • Whosoever received any blessings, received them due to his generosity.
  • The Enlightened becomes perfect only when all else is removed from in-between him and the Friend. Either he remains or the Friend.
  • When one comes on the path of love of the Friend, he becomes nonexistent (loses himself).
  • Those devoted to the path of the ‘knowledge of God’s realisation’ (Irfaan ) have nothing to speak of except God.
  • A seer of the ‘essence of things’ is characteristically mute and meditative.
  • Be overflowing with peace and joy,
and scatter them wherever you are
    and wherever you go.
  • He indeed is a true devotee blessed with the love of God, who is gifted with the following three attributes: river-like charity, i.e his sense of charity has no limits and is equally beneficial to all the creatures of God who approach him, Sun-like affection, i.e. his affection may be extended indiscriminately to all like sunlight and Earth-like hospitality, i.e. His loving embrace may be open to all like that of the earth.

Rainer Maria Rilke says

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don't let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

Hazrat Inayat Khan Says

Send Thy peace, O Lord, which is perfect and everlasting,
That our souls may radiate peace.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may think, act and speak,
    Hamoniously.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may be contented and
    Thankful for Thy bountiful gifts.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that amidst our worldly strife we
    may enjoy Thy bliss.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, that we may endure all, tolerate all
In the thought of Thy grace and mercy.
Send Thy peace, O lord, that our lives may become a divine
vision, and in Thy light all darkness may vanish.
Send Thy peace, O Lord, our Father and Mother, that we
Thy children on earth may all unite in one family.

Thou art my salvation and freedom is mine,

My heart, soul, and self, yea, all these are thine;
O Lord I have no more to offer!
I drink of the nectar of truth the divine,
As Moses thy word, as Yusuf they shine
who walk in thy ways; and Christ is thy sign:
Thou raisest to life everlasting!
Thou art as Muhammad to them that repine,
My spirit is purged as the gold from a mine!
I only know that my heart beats with thine,
And joys in boundless freedom!

Ibn Ata'llah says

How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is the One who is manifest by everything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is the One who is made manifest in everything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is the One who is manifest to everything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He was the One who was Manifest before there was anything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is more manifest than anything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is the One with whom there is nothing else?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when He is the One who is nearer to you than anything?
How can you imagine that something else veils Him
when if it had not been for Him, there would not have been anything?

A marvel!
See how existence becomes manifest in non-existence!
How the in-time holds firm alongside Him whose attribute is eternal!

Rumi says

When pain arrives side by side with your love
I promise not to flee
When you ask me for my life
I promise not to fight

I am holding a cup in my hand
By God if you do not come
Till the end of time
I promise not to pour out the wine
Nor to drink a sip

Your bright face is my day
Your dark curls bring the night
If you do not let me near you
I promise not go to sleep…nor rise

Your magnificence has made me a wonder
Your charm has taught me the way of love
I am the progeny of Abraham
I'll find my way through fire

Please, let me drink water from the jug
This love is not a short-lived fancy
It is the daily prayer, the year-after-year fast
I live it, like an act of worship, till the end of my life

But then, a tree
Blessed not with fruits of your bounty
Will be dry wood for fire
Even if it drinks the ocean

On the wings of the Friend, fly o my heart!
Fly and look upward
For high on the peak of presence
Earthlings like you will not be let in

Others praise God at the time of affliction
You stay awake day and night
Steady, watchful like the wheel of the firmament

Time to stop speaking of the Friend
Jealousy won't let me scatter the perfume to the wind

Rumi says

My heart tells me it is distressed with Him,
but I can only laugh at such pretended injuries.

Be fair, You who are the Glory of the just.
You, Soul, free of "we" and "I,"
subtle spirit within each man and woman.

When a man and a woman become one,
that "one" is You.
And when that one is obliterated, there You are.

Where is this "we" and this "I"?
By the side of the Beloved.
You made this "we" and this "I"
in order that you might play
this game of courtship with Yourself,
that all "you's" and "I's" might become one soul
and finally drown in the Beloved.

All this is true. Come!
You who are the Creative Word: Be
You, so far beyond description.

Is it possible for the bodily eyes to see You?
Can thought comprehend Your laughter or grief?
Tell me now, can it possibly see You at all?
Such a heart has only borrowed things to live with.

The garden of love is green without limit
and yields many fruits other than sorrow or joy.
Love is beyond either condition:
without spring, without autumn, it is always fresh.

The reflection cast from good friends is needed
until you become, without the aid of any reflector,
a drawer of water from the Sea.
Know that the reflection is at first just imitation,
but when it continues to recur,
it turns into direct realization of truth.
Until it has become direct realization,
don't part from the friends who guide you?
don't break away from the shell

Farid ud Din Atta says

Intoxicated by the Wine of Love.
From each a mystic silence Love demands.
What do all seek so earnestly? 'Tis Love.
What do they whisper to each other? Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts.
In Love no longer 'thou' and 'I' exist,
For Self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul,
Behold the Friend; Incomparable Love.
He who would know the secret of both worlds,
Will find the secret of them both, is Love.

Rabindranath Tagore says

On many an idle day have I grieved over lost time.
But it is never lost, my lord.
Thou hast taken every moment of my life
in thine own hands.
Hidden in the heart of things
thou art nourishing seeds into sprouts,
buds into blossoms,
and ripening flowers into fruitfulness
I was tired and sleeping on my idle bed
and imagined all work had ceased.
In the morning I woke up and
found my garden full with wonders of flowers.

Rabindranath Tagore says

Accept me, my lord, accept me for this while.
Let those orphaned days
that passed without thee be forgotten.
Only spread this little moment wide across thy lap,
holding it under thy light.
I have wandered in pursuit of voices
that drew me yet led me nowhere.
Now let me sit in peace and listen to thy words
in the soul of my silence.
Do not turn away thy face from my heart's dark secrets,
but burn them till they are alight with thy fire.

Rabindranath Tagore says

That I want thee, only thee,
let my heart repeat without end.
All desires that distract me, day and night,
are false and empty to the core.
As the night keeps hidden in its gloom the petition for light,
even thus in the depth of my unconsciousness rings the cry --
I want thee, only thee.
As the storm still seeks its end in peace
when it strikes against peace with all its might,
even thus my rebellion strikes against thy love and still its cry is --
I want thee, only thee.

Symeon says

What is this awesome mystery
that is taking place within me?
I can find no words to express it;
my poor hand is unable to capture it
in describing the praise and glory that belong
to the One who is above all praise,
and who transcends every word...
My intellect sees what has happened,
but it cannot explain it.
It can see, and wishes to explain,
but can find no word that will suffice;
for what it sees is invisible and entirely formless,
simple, completely uncompounded,
unbounded in its awesome greatness.
What I have seen is the totality recapitulated as one,
received not in essence but by participation.
Just as if you lit a flame from a flame,
it is the whole flame you receive.

Jami says

Whether your destiny is glory or disgrace,
Purify yourself of hatred and love of self.
Polish your mirror; and that sublime Beauty
From the regions of mystery
Will flame out in your heart
As it did for the saints and prophets.
Then, with your heart on fire with that Splendor,
The secret of the Beloved will no longer be hidden.

Attar says

Intoxicated by the Wine of Love.
From each a mystic silence Love demands.
What do all seek so earnestly? 'Tis Love.
What do they whisper to each other? Love.
Love is the subject of their inmost thoughts.
In Love no longer 'thou' and 'I' exist,
For Self has passed away in the Beloved.
Now will I draw aside the veil from Love,
And in the temple of mine inmost soul,
Behold the Friend; Incomparable Love.
He who would know the secret of both worlds,
Will find the secret of them both, is Love.
